Seminar Marking Rubric
After 8 weeks of researching and hard work, Room 23 presented there career seminars to the class. I presented mine Tuesday 1st December. My seminar was on Fashion Design, and I was really pleased with my outcome. I presented my information and photos on a power point presentation for starters, then did an interactive activity, which was a fashion design game. The had two minutes to design the dress, then 4 minutes to make it out of newspaper and sellotape. To finish off my seminar I did a quiz.
I think I did extremely well with my presentation.

Stepz
Walking into the hall for the first stepz lesson, everyone looked anxious and rather scared. No one was looking forward to dancing with a boy. But once the music started, and Simon taught us the dances, everyone forgot the first thought of fear and let loose. Now every student looks forward to the Friday lessons and cant wait til the Ball.
All these practices are a lead up to the Year 8 Leavers Social, which we will perform the 9 dances we've learnt.
The Year 8 Leavers Social will be on Wednesday 9th of December, and the decided theme is Glitz and Glam.
Room 23 Chrsitmas Party
With christmas coming up fast and steady, Room 23 students have formed a committee to organise our class End of Year Chrsitams Party. The theme has been decided as Kiwi Christmas, and the food, decorations, dress code, and music will be based on this idea.
The comite includes. Me (Comitee Leader), Lachlan, Tegan, Bailee, Shannon, Leota, Sophie and Danielle Moore. This event will be hld on Tuesday 8th December, but is invitation only.
Careers Day 2009
With the transition to High School only weeks away, Room 3 of Pukekohe Intermediate organised and ran a Year 8 Careers Day. Workers from across the district with exciting jobs travelled to our school on Thursday 19th of November. Each student attended 3 lectures from the employers, 1 for each periodical block (2 periods). The employers gave speeches on how their job works, what their day involves and how to get into their industry.
In my day, I visited Mark Ball the Mayor, Reon Graham Director of Sales at EMI Music, and Sam from Franklin County News.
All speakers were informative, and gave students a clear view of possible career options.

Typing Test
Every week, as part of the Digital Classroom Learning Program, students take the Sense Lang Typing Test to see how many words per minute they can type. After lunch we complete typing tutorials to increase our speed and accuracy.
This is the result for my highest ranking Words Per Minute test.
Highest WPM= 74
Island Style Mufti 2009
After the tragic Tsunami in Samoa, Schools in the Franklin District and broader, participated in the Island Style Mufti. Every student made a donation to the Relief Fund for the Families who have lost lives, loved ones and homes. The students wore Island Style clothes or accessories to school on Friday 20Th November. Most of the pupils from Pukekohe Intermediate took part of this mufti, and many took it upon themselves to dress up authentically. The day was a huge success, and photo's from the local newspaper prove that, with pictures of students in their outfits were taken at every school.
Grease Production
Since the beginning of term 2, students and teachers have been hard at work preparing for the Major Production of Grease. Auditions were done, and rehearsals were almost everyday. Major Production groups, such as Hair and Make-up, Props etc, met every Thursday and made sure our production was a winner for the crowd! Come stage night, everyone was roaring to go and excited about the performance ahead. There were two teams, Team Lightning and Team T-Birds, who both performed one matinee and one night performance each.
I was in the Hair and Make-Up Group with Miss Austin, but did Hair while the others did Make-Up. I worked on main characters like Sandy, Patty, Rizzo and Marty, plus all the company and dancers.
All the performances were definitely crowd pleasers, and the cast had a ball.
Being even a small part of this amazing experience was a great opportunity and we had heaps of fun. I certainly cant wait for another Production!

Maui's Dolphin Mural Completion!
After plenty of hard work and organisation our Mural is finally finished! Room 23 put the finishing touches to the mural by painting their names into the waves Vanessa had done. The completion took a while due to hold backs with the weather and receiving the sponsorship. It looks amazing and is an asset to the school and our community. We hope it gives awareness to the public so the can also help in the campaign to prevent the Mauis Dolphin Decline.

NZCT AIMS GAMES 2009
After hard weeks of training and fundraising, Sunday 6Th September finally came and 80 Pukekohe Intermediate School Students hit the road for Tauranga. We gathered at the school car park, loaded up the vans then headed off to compete in the NZCT AIMS National Sporting Championship.
The students arrived in the Mount at about 3.30pm, where we then drove to our camp ground and had a team meeting. We were told our cabin numbers, then we went over rules and safety. After a snack, unpacking our gear and a quick play on the playground, we jumped into our vans and headed to Queen Elizabeth The Second Event Centre in Tauranga for the opening ceremony.
We sat through an hours worth of entertainment before the AIMS Games were officially opened.
Back in the van we went and after 5 times around the round-a-bout, and getting lost, we arrived back at Golden Grove. We ate our dinner the parent helpers had prepared for us, then it was off to get ready for bed. The next morning we were woken at 6.30. We prepared for the day ahead, then we travelled to Harbourside Netball Centre. We were extremely early so we got a spot in the pavilion, then walked to Blake Park to watch the soccer girls. After their win, we went back to the courts and started our warm up. Our first game was a loss to Whakatane, our score being 24-30. We had some lunch then we had our second game, one of our hardest.
We lost 36-19 to Northcross. After a long day we drove home back to the campground, showered, ate then we were off to the RSA for Dinner.
Monday wasn't a good start for us Netball Girls, but we went to bed early for a good sleep for the next day. We were told we didn't have to wake up at 6.30 but we were woken by Olivia knocking on our door at 6.10am.
There was no point going back to sleep, so we got up and got ready. We psyched ourselves up listening to our team song as we drove to the courts. We warmed up then jumped on court for our first game of the day. We came out with a win, 25-24 against Taupo, who in the end took out the competition for Netball. Our second game was a loss to Peachgrove 30-17. After our third devastating loss, we went out fighting against Tahatai Coast and won 40-21. We went to the movies that afternoon and watched The Proposal. We had dinner at the RSA then bedtime. Another early wake up. After being placed in the Bottom 16, we wanted to prove ourselves. That day we had two more wins against John Paul College 33-6, and Hastings 42-21. In the late afternoon we drove to the beach, half of the team walked up the Mount and the other half stayed on the beach. We arrived 15 minutes late to dinner, and rushed our food down. The next day we lost against Katikati 27-23, then won against Bethleham College 33-25. Winning our last game placed us in the C Grade Final on Friday. We came up against Havelock North and won 34-27. At 1pm we travelled to the closing ceremony. We sat through the presentations, and medal prize giving. Pukekohe Intermediate did extremely well. Boys Hockey are the NZCT AIMS Games Back to Back Hockey Champions Again. Trent Smith received gold in Boys Single Tennis, First in Boys Doubles with Jordan Syme and First Mixed Doubles with Kelly Drew. Kelly Drew got first in Girls Singles. Olivia Gillot received Gold and Silver, Byron Pointon Bronze and Sian De Arth Bronze, all in Gymsports. A big congratulations to all teams who participated! It was an amazing experience, and I'm sure the memories wont be forgotten any time soon.

Music Websites
As part of the Music Inquiry Unit in Term 3, Room 23 created and designed websites for our Authentic Challenge. We were given two website builder options, and had to trial each out and decide which one to use. The websites were based on a music artist we had created ourselves and their life as a musician or artist. We had to include: Biography, Track list, Discography, Back Track, Filmography, Lyrics to a song we had written, Photo Gallery, Blog, CD Release poster and concert dates. We were given just over a week to build the sites to a high standard. On our deadline we published the finished product, then as a class voted for the websites we thought deserved a place in the Netguide Schools Multimedia TVNZ 6 Challenge. Two thirds of our classes websites were sent through to the competition, and are now in the running to win a laptop. Multiple Intelligences
Google Doodle
During the first few weeks of term 3, our class have been in the process of designing Google doodles, representing New Zealand.
Google was holding a competition for kids in New Zealand to design a Google Doodle. Google doodle's are artistic drawings that are shown on the NZ Google Homepage.
Each student was given a blank Google design sheet and was expected to come up with creative ideas to include on their Google Doodle. This was a success. Many pupils had great ideas and all of the designs look awesome !
As a class we voted for a Google Doodle that stood out the most for us, and could be in the process to be one of the 8 Google doodles chosen from our class to send to Google.
100 finalists will be chosen from all over New Zealand, 25 from each age group and the prize will be a Google Certificate. 20 winners will be chosen out of all the age groups. The prizes: A copy of the Google design for their school, an invitation to the ceremony for the National winners; their Google Doodle displayed on the Google website for the public to vote, and a Doodle 4 Google goody bag. The national age group winner will be chosen by the public's vote, and there will be one design chosen from each age group. Prizes: Interactive white board for their school, and laptop for the winner.
Dennis Hwang, Google's Webmaster, will pick the National overall winner, out of the four chosen age group winners. This winner will recieve $10,000 worth of technology equipment for their school, and their design will be on the Google homepage for 24 hours

Cross Country
As the year 8 girls lined up on the start line, I felt a rush of nerves flow through my body. My heart was pumping as I anxiously awaited to hear that torturous gun. When Mr Scott finally shot the gun, there was a huge scramble to get to the start of the course. Everyone was pushing and shoving. When everyone found their feet, we were off. Grace zoomed to the front, leading the pack. Some people made the mistake of starting fast and dropping back due to exhaustion. Coming through into the finish line was such a relief. I was knackered. For me, cross country is quite a challenge.Although I did beat my last years placing, I felt if I had put 100% effort into it, I could have possibly done better. With all my training lading up to the day from Mr Short, I was extremely disappointed.
While the year 8 boys raced, we rested up on the grass bank at Bleidslode Park. After the results and certificates were handed out, we walked back to school.
Most students had full participation and tried their best. The best of luck to the Zone Cross Country Team.

Every girl deserves a Hair Straightner of their own.
Hair Straightners are a necessary essential gadget for every girl. They are a small price to pay for sleek, straight hair.
Hair Straightners are a necessary essential gadget for every girl. They are a small price to pay for sleek, straight hair.
Hair straightners can come with a high price tag, especially in a time of a global recession. Remington though, for example, are reasonably cheaper than designer brands. The more expensive hair straightners generally have better features and heat up quicker.
Hair straightners on average 12-18 months. Higher quality straightners; such as GHD, last a bit longer. Hair Straightners produce intense heat. Placing the extremely hot irons in close to your sensitive hair is obviously going to do damage. Temperature ranges can reach extreme levels.
It is important to follow safety precautions when using your hair iron. By following a few simple tips you will insure that you will avoid damaging your hair and straightner.
Use good ceramic hair oil to lock in moisture. Always check the reviews and comments when purchasing a hair straightner to make sure you are buying a quality brand. Try to reduce the amount of times you submit your hair to high temperatures.
Hair straightners are a good buy for all girls and in my opinion; they are every girl’s best friend!

Pukekohe Makes a Difference for the Mauis!
Maui’s Dolphins, also known as the North Island Hector, are on the brink of extinction, with approximately 111 dolphins remaining. The numbers are continuing to decrease.
Room 23 of Pukekohe Intermediate is making a difference by trying to prevent the rapid decline of these native marine mammals. Maui’s Dolphins are the world’s most endangered dolphin species. Our class of 30 students decided to create a mural. The mural is both to advise and to persuade members of the public to call for a ban on all set net fishing in conservation areas, on the West Coast of the North Island.
Room 23 has participated in several interesting projects leading us to the mural. Our class has commissioned a local Pukekohe artist, Vanessa Graham, to help design and paint the mural.
Room 23 student’s created their own illustrations and Vanessa combined these pieces of art to create the finishing design.
The mural has come together extremely well, and it looks remarkable. It will remain at the school for many years to come and will be an asset to the school and community.
Tapuae Competition 2009
Week 1, Term 2 Pukekohe Intermediate School held a school wide Tapuae competition. Dominique Hancock, Sports Co-ordinater from Room 45 was the organizer for this competition.
The teams were entered as buddy classes for the competition, and a maximum of 16 team players were able to take the court at once. Lupe Soapi of Room 23, and Abi Chapman of Room 36 were our team captains.
Students from the 2 teams played a number of games against a lot of challenging classes, playing a total of 3 games, making it into the quarter finals! In this game we went up against Room 13 & 45 and successfully came out with victory, which then took us into the Semi-finals.
Our first semi-final game was on Tuesday 16th on June and versed the same 2 classes. We had a really tough game and the weather was really rough, but even though we had to put up with that, Room 23 & 36 still came out with a win.
Wednesday 17th of June we played against Room 28 & 45. It was a very tough competition. But we pulled through with a win.
Then on Wednesday 25th June, Room 23 went head to head against Room 3 for the finals. It was a unpredictable game but Room 23 took out the game, and the whole competiton. Room 23 did not lose any game in this whole competition!

Matariki is a small cluster of seven stars that signify the Maori New Year. Also Known as the Seven Sisters and Pleaides (Greek). It translates as Mata Riki ‘Little Eyes’ or Mata Ariki ‘Eyes of God’.
Matariki had faded out of everyone’s mind, up until about 10 years ago. Now, Matariki is celebrated all over New Zealand and is becoming more popular and common.
Matariki disappears at the end of May. It then reappears in our skies at the beginning of June. Matariki is visible to the naked eye just before dawn. Traditionally a lookout was posted to watch for pre-dawn rise of Matariki.
If the stars are hazy and faint a lean season will follow. If the stars are bright and clear a warm season will be ahead.
Matariki has many legends. Different tribes have their own stories about Matariki. One of the legends is that the children of light were taken from there parents and placed into the sky.
As part of a nationwide involvement, Pukekohe Intermediate is holding their own celebrations. They have planned a Matariki Enrichment to be held every Thursday afternoon this term. A Ki-O-Rahi tournament has been organised for week 10 which wil be a school wide house competition. Kapa Haka will be Performing at Franklin:The Centre. There is also a dawn ceremony to be held at Pukekohe Hill.
Nowhere else in the world see’s the sky as we do. Our new year is marked by Matariki and the sighting of the next New Moon!

i-Web Peer Pressure
In term 1, as part of our DARE authentic challenge, we completed a i-Web. Together, Me & Jamie decided to chose peer pressure as our main topic. We then chose our main question of How can peer pressure take over your life? Through this project, we found out how peer pressure can pull you down and make you do crazy things. On our i-Web we have a page about ways gto assertively say no! to peer pressure and how to avoid the situation.

The Bad Choice
The Bad Choice
As Tim walked through the silent hallway he saw eyes glare at him. Some started to giggle, some snarled and some whispered to their mates.Tim wasn’t very popular. He and the rest of the ‘Geeks” had no real friends. They were bullied teased and spat on. They didn’t have much fashion sense either. Tim had buck teeth with braces, big tinted glasses that covered just about his whole face and he wore checkered trousers with a white blouse tucked in with a brace.
Although he was 12 years old, he felt about 2 years old against the bullies of Pukekohe Intermediate. He tried to act cool sometimes, but it didn’t work. When the bully asked him for a fight he agreed and said “I can beat you.
He ended up with crutches and bruises all over his body.
As he walked home one humid day, he noticed something shimmering in the bright green grass. He looked down to find an electronic device called a cell phone.
He was amazed. He had neve seen one before because his parents didn’t believe in kids having a cell phone. He picked it up, turned it on and skipped down the road to his house.
He opened the door, surprised to find that no-one was home. He rushed into his room and started fiddling on the cell phone.
Tim had never realised how much his life was in need of a cell phone!
When Tim’s mother arrived home, Tim decided to not tell her about the phone. He knew she would make him take it into the Police Station for Lost & Found.
The following day at school was just like any other day. He was teased again, bullied and his glasses were knocked off his face. This didn’t faze him though because he knew he had a phone and for some insane reason he felt special inside.
On his journey home, Tim found a little slip of paper stuck to the drain. He picked it up and read it. It said” Jimbo’s Number- 027 3595 561” Jimbo was also one of the Geeks at school. He rushed through the doors at his house, slipped his backpack off his back and picked up his new phone, making sure no one was around.
He typed in Jimbo’s number and started texting him. At first it was just a few mean words here and there. Then Tim started to get really aggressive. He told Jimbo he was a nerdy geek who didn’t know fashion if it was an easy math equation. Even though Tim knew it was wrong to say these hurtful words, he felt strong and one of the bullies.
As morning approached, Charlie (the school bully) started picking on him during morning interval. Because he wanted to be one of the “Gang” Tim made sure no teachers were around and then pulled out his phone and showed Charlie the messages he had sent to Jimbo.
Charlie was very impressed and asked him to hang out with them. Tim, absolutely stunned said “Yes” straight away, without a minutes thought.
“On one condition!” Charlie exclaimed. Tim gulped. “You get rid of those horrible clothes and enormous glasses” Tim did as he was told. He didn’t want anything to get in the way of being popular!
On Friday, when Tim arrived at school, everyone stared at him. But not like they had done a week before. They stared in astonishment. Tim wasn’t the same guy they had once known. He had his newly dyed blonde hair spiked into a Mohawk, black jeans and a black leather jacket. Some girls battered their eyelashes; others waved hello, bright red in the face. He was one of the cool kids now.
The text bullying continued and Jimbo got sadder and lonelier by the second. But till, Jimbo chose not to tell anyone about the texts he was receiving. He would sit in a dark corner and cry about these messages; alone.
A couple of weeks passed. Nothing had changed. Except for one thing. There was a new girl at school who had moved from New Orleans, America. She was really pretty and had a wonderful smile.
Secretly Tim had a huge rush on the new girl, Arna, and found it hard not to show it. Everyday when they passed each other in the hallways, he would wave and blush radiantly.
One day Tim plucked up the courage to talk to Arna. She wasn’t really paying attention, so Tim decided to show Aran the horrible text messages he had sent to Jimbo.
Arna was less than impressed and told Tim that she didn’t like what he had done or Tim himself.
She ignored him for days, look away from him in the hallways and deleting all his text messages.
But the more Arna ignored Tim, the more Tim wanted Arna to like him. He tried talking to her again but she just walked away and didn’t say a word.
Then out of the blue, Tim received a text from Arna! He was so excited; he nearly forgot to open the message. When he did, he opened it and read it.
It read: “I LIKE YOU BUT I HATE WHAT YOUR DOING TO JIMBO”
The message made Tim think about what he had done. He didn’t like being bullied so why should he bully someone else? How could he be so cruel? Tim then decided to confront Jimbo and apologize.
The following day Tim looked everywhere for Jimbo but Jimbo was no where to be found. He did the same thing for the next week .
Jimbo had been absent for a whole week now and Tim was starting to lose his desire to apologize to him.
But then Jimbo turned up during morning interval on Friday. Tim ignored him for awhile then went up to him. Tim admitted to his mistake and apologized. Jimbo thanked him but said “ You’ll never be forgiven for this”
Tim was bouncing of the walls. He ran straight to Arna and told her the whole story. She hugged him and smiled. “Thanks Tim”
