Hard Materials

For the past two terms, as part of the Year 8 Technology Rotation, half of Room 23 have been attending Hard Materials with Mr Sibley. While the other class has attended Food Technology with Mrs Garrett. Room 23 were lucky enough to have extra sessions late last year, so at the begginning of 2009 we were able to finish previous projects and start new projects. We have completed a animal project, a box, an acrylic (plastic) project, and lastly a toy project. Next term we start food technology with Mrs Garrett.

Every girl deserves a Hair Straightner of their own.
Hair Straightners are a necessary essential gadget for every girl. They are a small price to pay for sleek, straight hair.

Hair straightners can come with a high price tag, especially in a time of a global recession. Remington though, for example, are reasonably cheaper than designer brands. The more expensive hair straightners generally have better features and heat up quicker.
Hair straightners on average 12-18 months. Higher quality straightners; such as GHD, last a bit longer. Hair Straightners produce intense heat. Placing the extremely hot irons in close to your sensitive hair is obviously going to do damage. Temperature ranges can reach extreme levels.
It is important to follow safety precautions when using your hair iron. By following a few simple tips you will insure that you will avoid damaging your hair and straightner.
Use good ceramic hair oil to lock in moisture. Always check the reviews and comments when purchasing a hair straightner to make sure you are buying a quality brand. Try to reduce the amount of times you submit your hair to high temperatures.
Hair straightners are a good buy for all girls and in my opinion; they are every girl’s best friend!

Pukekohe Makes a Difference for the Mauis!

Maui’s Dolphins, also known as the North Island Hector, are on the brink of extinction, with approximately 111 dolphins remaining. The numbers are continuing to decrease.
Room 23 of Pukekohe Intermediate is making a difference by trying to prevent the rapid decline of these native marine mammals. Maui’s Dolphins are the world’s most endangered dolphin species. Our class of 30 students decided to create a mural. The mural is both to advise and to persuade members of the public to call for a ban on all set net fishing in conservation areas, on the West Coast of the North Island.
Room 23 has participated in several interesting projects leading us to the mural. Our class has commissioned a local Pukekohe artist, Vanessa Graham, to help design and paint the mural.
Room 23 student’s created their own illustrations and Vanessa combined these pieces of art to create the finishing design.
The mural has come together extremely well, and it looks remarkable. It will remain at the school for many years to come and will be an asset to the school and community.

Tapuae Competition 2009

Week 1, Term 2 Pukekohe Intermediate School held a school wide Tapuae competition. Dominique Hancock, Sports Co-ordinater from Room 45 was the organizer for this competition.

The teams were entered as buddy classes for the competition, and a maximum of 16 team players were able to take the court at once. Lupe Soapi of Room 23, and Abi Chapman of Room 36 were our team captains.

Students from the 2 teams played a number of games against a lot of challenging classes, playing a total of 3 games, making it into the quarter finals! In this game we went up against Room 13 & 45 and successfully came out with victory, which then took us into the Semi-finals.

Our first semi-final game was on Tuesday 16th on June and versed the same 2 classes. We had a really tough game and the weather was really rough, but even though we had to put up with that, Room 23 & 36 still came out with a win.

Wednesday 17th of June we played against Room 28 & 45. It was a very tough competition. But we pulled through with a win.

Then on Wednesday 25th June, Room 23 went head to head against Room 3 for the finals. It was a unpredictable game but Room 23 took out the game, and the whole competiton. Room 23 did not lose any game in this whole competition!

Orienteering 2009

On Friday 1st May, Pukekohe Intermediate sent 5 orienteering squads to Totara Park Manurewa to compete at the Zone Orienteering. We arrived at 11.30 to warm up then the Year 7 girls had a start time of 12.03pm. Each squad started exactly 3 minutes after each other.
Pukekohe Intermediate did extremely well, with all squads coming a placing and moved onto Auckland Champions. Grace Gill did amazing scoring a time of 12.47 minutes.
Then on Tuesday 12th May, all squad members travelled to Reeves Farm in Patumahoe to compete at Auckland Champs. It was very cold and extremely muddy and wet but everyone got awesome results. The year 8 girls A came second by only one hundreth of second!

Cadbury Chocolate Fundraising

This year Pukekohe Intermediate is taking part in the Cadbury Chocolate School Fundraiser. This year the money that is raised by all of the year 8's will go towards two marquee tents. They will both be named and contain the school logo. These tents will be taken to zone sports. The money that is raised by the year 7's will go towards their year 8 camp next year.

There is going to prizes for the top chocolate sellers. One prize for year 7 and one for year 8. There is also two prizes for the two top classes and a spot prize for anyone that has sold at least one box of chocolate.

Many people have taken part in this school wide event an look forward to sell them again next year.

Youth Week Report

This year, as part of the nation wide Youth Week, Pukekohe Intermediate councillors organised a week of Daily Trivia Questions, an Art Competition and a Mufti Day. The trivia questions were put into the daily notices and students had to answer these questions before morning interval, handed into the Student Centre. Each day we drew out a winner and they received a prize. The students who won have been listed below showing what day they won and what question they answered correct.

Monday- How many gold medals did New Zealand win at the 2008 Beijing Olympics? 3 gold medals. The winner was Brendan Byerley of Room 23

Tuesday- What New Zealand artist sings ‘under my skin’? Gin Wigmore. The winner was Shannon van den Berg of room 23.

Wednesday- What major hit movie stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John? Grease. The winner was Vaughn Hannah of Room 5.

Thursday- What does Aotearoa (New Zealand) Mean? Land of the Long White Cloud. The winner was Rachel Van of room 30.

Friday- Who plays Daniel Potts in Shortland Street? Ido Drent. The winner was Avril Mita of Room 1.

During the week we ran an art competition that students could enter and be into win prizes. Billie Paterson of Room 23 judged all the entries. It was a difficult decision to make, as there was only 1st 2nd and 3rd Place Prizes.

2nd Place- Avril Mita of Room 1

3rd Place- Pauline Paratene of Room 44.

The big success of the week was the Mufti Day, which was held on Wednesday 27th May. Buddy Classes were assigned to specific colours to wear on the day. From each of the classes, councillors chose the best-dressed student in the class. Then all of the students that were chosen from individual classrooms came together and the councillors then chose the 3 best dressed out of the school. The winning students were Kathleen Griffin- Room 12, Jamie Turkington- Room 23, and Daniel Bullet- Room 36. Students enjoyed the awesome day organised and the school Councillors were pleased, as Pukekohe Intermediate raised $374.50.

Ngahinapouri School Netball Tournament Hamilton

On Sunday 24th May, a netball team of 10 girls, Danelle Cox (Captain) Jazmin Fulton, Kelly Drew, Tegan Hunter, Danielle McNabb, Shannon van den Berg, Havannah Pearson, Jorgia Watson, Billie Paterson and Bailee Graham, travelled to Minogue Park Netball Courts in Hamilton.The competed in 5 games throughout the day. It started off sunny for the first 2 games but then the rain hit and it was freezing cold. Pukekohe Platinum did extremeley well placing second in the tournament by only one goal! We had many injuries and numb fingers but we all had an awesome day and it was great fun!

Coca Cola Netball

On Wednesday 20th May, Bruce Pulman Netball Centre was packed with over 20 schools competing in Netball Games throughout the day.
Pukekohe Intermediate sent 12 competitive teams and 4 social teams. This gave girls the opportunity to get involved in sports in school. Pukekohe Intermediate placed very well in all divisions. The year 7 division 1, Pukekohe Roses came 1st, Pussycat Girls 5th and 9 Golden Stars 6th Place. Year 8 division 2 Pukekohe Gold 1st, Pukekohe Bronze 3rd, Pukekohe Stingaz 5th Place. Year 8 division 1 Pukekohe Platinum 2nd and Pukekohe Silver 3rd Place.

It ws a day enjoyed by all, even though it was pouring with rain!

Dziah 2.0 Performance

On Wednesday 27 May 2009, Pukekohe Intermediate had the pleasure of enjoying the entertainment of Dziah 2.0, who are the current New Zealand Hip Hop Champions. Before they took the stage, Billie Paterson, Danelle Cox and Christian Nepia had the chance to interview and chat with the dance crew.

P.I.S: So how long have you guys been together as a crew?
Dziah: Just over a year.
P.I.S: So you guys haven’t been together long. What inspires your dances/routines?
Dziah: Our mum’s! Oh and the pies from Pukekohe! They're nice!
P.I.S: Did you guys come from other crews or is this your first?
Dziah: Most of us are from other crews but for some, this is their first crew, and were already a big success.
P.I.S: Did you go to Dance Studio's as kids?
Dziah: Not really.
P.I.S:What about at school?
Dziah: Yes, we moon walked in the technology atrium.
P.I.S: Have you been in any recent competitions?
Dziah: We won the title of the New Zealand National Hip Hop Championship, and we will represent New Zealand at the World Championship. We also won the Stomp Competition.
P.I.S: So do you have anything to say to your fans who are wanting to become big Hip Hop stars in the future?
Dziah: Just to practice and give it your all.

After the interview, we watched an incredible performance by the Dziah 2.0 dance crew. The crowd went wild throughout the performance as the crew displayed amazing talent in our school hall. They were also a laugh and a half, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
